Alex Higgin-Houser
Haymarket
Alex Higgin-Houser (he/him) is a librettist, director, and theatre-maker. His most recent commercially produced work, Haymarket (music: David Kornfeld) won Chicago's Joseph Jefferson Award for Best New Musical, was named one of the top 10 shows of the year by ABC Chicago and the Chicago Tribune, and was recently selected for the inaugural Drama Club Camp artist’s residency in Maine. His current piece-in-development, Discovery (music: Dan Gibson), written in collaboration with a number of former NASA astronauts, has twice been selected for the Catwalk Developmental Artists Residency in New York, and is currently under development with Drama Club Productions. Shadow on the Wall (music: Zonia Tsang), his shadow-puppet opera about the pardoned Blackwater mercenaries, had its digital premier with the American Opera Project. His musical Adventurers (music: Lucy O’Brien), a DnD musical where dice rolls determine the plot, was recently workshopped at Whitman College
As founding Artistic Director of Underscore Theatre Company, Alex directed and produced musical theatre in Chicago from 2011-2018, while curating and co-producing a number of world premiere musicals with the Chicago Musical Theatre Festival, which he co-founded in 2014. Having received his MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from NYU Tisch, Alex has worked with students at The New Studio on Broadway, Elon University, The University of Chicago, Whitman College, and most recently Oberlin College."
